Architectural authorship documented in Byrne’s own 1939 statement

Francis Barry Byrne

Architecture and art

What the reviewed record states

In his December 1939 text addressed to Father Fletcher, Byrne describes the church plan and exterior as his design. He says the plan centered on the Eucharistic altar and explains his architectural intentions. This first-person statement is the strongest reviewed source for his design role.

Attributed account

Atkinson’s notes identify Byrne as architect of the church and rectory. Father White’s later history describes a six-percent fee discussion, a dispute with trustee chair McGraw, and eventual signed contracts. Byrne also names sculptor Alfonso Iannelli’s direct modeling of the exterior terra-cotta ornament.

Open questions

The Byrne and Ryan firm agreement, drawing authorship, engineering responsibility, and construction changes should be tied to signed plans, contracts, and correspondence. The source folder contains indexed material beyond the two texts reviewed here.

Sources and research links

A linked folder is a finding aid or source location, not proof that every item in it has been reviewed. Descriptions distinguish source text from independent verification.
